Peripheral Blood Signatures of Lead Exposure

BACKGROUND Current evidence indicates that even low-level lead (Pb) exposure can have detrimental effects, especially in children. We tested the hypothesis that Pb exposure alters gene expression patterns in peripheral blood cells and that these changes reflect dose-specific alterations in the activity of particular pathways. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDING Using Affymetrix Mouse Genome 430 2.0...

Blood lead, ethnic origin, and lead exposure.

A survey of blood lead concentrations is reported in a group of 199 young Walsall children (3-6 years of age). The geometric mean blood lead concentration was 0.47 mumol/l (range 0.2-1.6 mumol/l). There were no significant differences in blood lead concentrations between groups of children with different ages, sex, ethnic origin, or environment.

Blood gene expression signatures predict exposure levels.

To respond to potential adverse exposures properly, health care providers need accurate indicators of exposure levels. The indicators are particularly important in the case of acetaminophen (APAP) intoxication, the leading cause of liver failure in the U.S. We hypothesized that gene expression patterns derived from blood cells would provide useful indicators of acute exposure levels. To test th...

Neurohumoral blood pressure regulation in lead exposure.

Previous human studies demonstrated that lead exposure may modify the metabolism of catecholamines and of hormones controlled by the hypothalamo-pituitary axis and may affect the kallikrein-kinin system. This paper reports unpublished data on the plasma renin activity of lead-exposed workers; these results are in agreement with those of previous human and experimental studies suggesting that th...
